Books for a buck and ebook reader on sale
Ever heard of Books for a Buck? If you haven't, you might want to check it out. The first month the book goes up for sale, it is only a dollar. Prices after that are reasonable. I've put the link at the bottom of this post because I think you'll be glad to know about it and purchase there.
The owner/publisher, Rob Preece is a really nice guy. I met him in an elevator in Virginia when I was at Epicon this last March.
Rob posted this announcement of ebook readers on sale on an email loop I'm on, and I thought you'd be interested. How many times can I say on in one paragraph, my friends? Come on. ;)Or should I just say COME. Or GO. Whatever.
Direct quote starts here:
I'm sure many of you guys saw this reported on Mobileread.com or teleread.net, but TigerDirect is offering the Sony Reader for $99. That's a pretty huge markdown from the regular $299 (itself a price reduction from the $350 original price).
I don't know if this means that Sony is cleaning their inventory to get ready for a version 2, but if you've been thinking about getting yourself a new eBook reader, this might be a great time to grab one.
For those who haven't seen this, it's a cute device, a bit smaller than the eBookWise and quite a bit lighter. The electronic ink display seems to have a pretty good contrast (it's black on gray), and battery life is 7,500 page turns (rechargable). That's a lot of books on one charge.
Here's the URL: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3205214&CatId=228
Happy 4th of July.
(PS if $99 is too steep, I still like my PalmIIIxe for eBook reading and they're selling them for $29.99).

Screwy
My mouse works today. My blogger screen reloaded, oh, seventeen times or so before I finally hit the right button to make it stop. Which one that was? Uh, who knows. I was hitting everything on the keyboard and the screen, trying a bunch of things with each blipping screen. I think the reload button was the key to killing the screwy screen thing.
My tab button today...appears to be dropping whatever window I'm in (I ALWAYS multi-task with several screens up at once)--anyhow, tab makes that screen go down. So, that will be amazingly fun while trying to write today.
Pray that I get my shit together and focus, please. I just wanna finish SOMETHING, even if it's wrong.
I'll be pulling names for the blog posting drawing in a few minutes. Good luck!
And, just because the screen isn't screwy enough--I clicked on PUBLISH THIS POST and it came back, Sorry, your request can not be processed. I wonder how many times I'll have to hit that button to get this to you.
You know, it's of national importance. LOL

I've been having so many problems with Blogger lately that I went ahead and moved the Devon's Wish blog to WordPress. Sheesh.
It's a pain. Nothing annoys me more than the computer acting up. Hope yours decides to play nice.
Blogger IS being screwy. I have to hit the post button 3 times to get something up. It says, sorry this cannot be done or processed at this time, or something like that. WEIRD little computer glitch. Then, next time, it works. Crazy, man.

Clean mouse
I clean my mouse all the time. That's not the problem. I have trojans. I've backed up my document files. But how to back up the nightmare inbox? Now, that's a lifetime job. I literally have thousands of emails in files there. But I can't figure out how to extract them into word files in any way besides the tedious "Open, cut and paste" method that is painful, at best, when your mouse doesn't work.
In other news...hm...(trying to think up something else to say)...
The sun is shining in Missouri.
I am trying a new meditational thing. To raise my "vibrational level" of being. (Hocus pocus talk for rising above my depressed nature, and trying to think positive.)
I want you to know I read all the comments you post, even if I don't go and respond underneath them. They pop up in my inbox. And I sometimes go over the columns to double check that I didn't miss something.
Anyhow, gonna try and get something written. Have a snappy happy day, friends.

I am still trying to figure out how to get the crumbs out of my keyboard but I do have a clean mouse.
Have a nice summer
I have dust bunnies on my f keys. I'd like to know how to clean those off. Any suggestions?
Try this link (there's a how to video)
http://www.ehow.com/how_2026_clean-computer-keyboard.html
Also for dust bunnies you can buy cans of compressed air at computer shops.
I'm trying to remember how I backed up my inbox before I switched computers a couple years ago....
Hmm... I think I just saved eached of them individually by going to File and Save As. There's got to be a better way to do it, though, I'm just clueless as to what.
This is how I save my emails..
I go to my Documents and make a new folder and name it outlook express.
Then i open outlook express, then I click on tools, then options. Then I click on maintenance.then I click on storage and change the location to my documents, outlook express.( the folder I made. click ok. Exit and then reopen.. I am using Vista now so I am trying to remember how it is done in outlook express.. But this is the general idea.. I then burn this folder to a cd when i backup my files.. So you will always have a copy of my emails.. Of course, if you don't back up often then you are in big trouble if your computer so down..

Gift Certificates! (And computer problems)
I am cursed, it seems. My mouse only dances up and down in vertical lines and it takes twenty minutes of rolling it around to get it to go where I want. Then it is a jerky maneuver. It makes everything a lot harder and more time consuming. Suffice it to say that a lot of my efforts on pc have been limited of late.
I am learning to use the keyboard buttons to move the prompt thingy around. (Yeah. That's like...annoying.)
Anyhow, I haven't crapped out on you all together. I've just spent weeks now in trying to find the worm causing this problem. This morning, it is working. That's the worst of it. The thing is random.
Enough whining. As you may have guessed, because of all my problems, I didn't send out a newsletter this month. I plan to send you out one in July. That will have news of the release I have expected at the end of July.
And I'll pick some blog posting winners. Tell me what you've been up to. Get your name in the drawing! Every blog entry comment gets your name in the hat. I'm giving out $10 gift certificates.

Hi Carys, sorry about your computer/mouse problems. I hope you figure it out soon.
Did you do a simple test like trying another mouse to rule out the mouse as a problem?
I think it is your mouse.... Do you have an opitcal mouse or a mouse with a ball. The mouse with the ball gets fuzz on the rollers.. Open the mouse and clean each roller and sometimes it is hard to get off.. Let us know...
Brenda
It's not the mouse. I wish it were so simple and cheap!
It's definitely a worm.
Hi Carys,

This story is funny.
Bungee Jumping In Mexico
Alice and Frank are Bungee-jumping one day. Alice says to Frank, "You know,
we could make a lot of money running our own Bungee-jumping business in
Mexico." Frank thinks this is a great idea, so they pool their money and
buy everything they need: a tower, an elastic cord, insurance, etc.
They travel to Mexico and begin to set up on the square. As they are
constructing the tower, a crowd begins to assemble. Slowly, more and more
people gather to watch them at work When they had finished, there was such a
crowd, they thought it would be a good idea to give a demonstration.
So, Alice jumps. She bounces at the end of the cord, but when she comes
back up, Frank notices that she has a few cuts and scratches. Unfortunately,
Frank isn't able to catch her and she falls again, bounces, and comes back
up again. This time, she is bruised and bleeding.
Again, Frank misses her. Alice falls again and bounces back up.
This time, she comes back pretty messed up -- she's got a couple of broken
bones and is almost unconscious. Luckily, Frank finally catches her this
time and says, "What happened? Was the cord too long?"
Barely able to speak, Alice gasps, "No, the Bungee cord was fine...It was
the crowd. What the heck is a piñata?!"

FOR A BETTER AND JOYFUL LIFE....
Always try to help a friend in need

Believe in yourself

Be brave...but it's ok to be afraid sometimes

Study hard

Give lots of kisses

Laugh often

Don't be overly concerned with your weight, it's just a number

Always try to see the glass half full

Meet new people, even if they look different to you

Remain calm, even when it seems hopeless

Take lots of naps..

Be weird whenever you have the chance

Love your friends, no matter who they are
Don't waste food

RELAX

Take an occasional risk

Try to have a little fun each day....it's important

Work together as a team

Share a joke with friends

Fall in love with someone..

...and say "I love you" often

Express yourself creatively

Be conscious of your appearance

Always be up for surprises

Love someone with all of your heart

Share with friends

Watch your step

It will get better

There is always someone who loves you more than you know

Exercise to keep fit

Live up to your name

Seize the Moment

Hold on to good friends; they are few and far between

Indulge in the things you truly love

Cherish every Sunday

At the end of the day... PRAY

....... and close your eyes
And smile at least once a day!

How to Tell the Sex of a Fly
JUST TOO CUTE.

A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking around with a fly swatter.
"What are you doing?" She asked.
"Hunting Flies" He responded.
"Oh ! Killing any?" She asked
"Yep, 3 males, 2 Females," he replied.

Intrigued, she asked. "How can you tell them apart?"
He responded, "3 were on a beer can, 2 were on the phone."

Aaagh.
So, um, I have two trojans I've been playing with for, oh, a couple weeks now--and I'm not talking condoms. That's why I haven't been posting. Most of the time, my pc is fighting (me) back. The dumb mouse just up and decides not to move sideways sometimes. (Most of the time.) I've restarted the system, oh, easily 6-8 times this morning, scandisking, etc. Finally, the mouse works! YAY!
Let's hope that it stays functional. If you have any clue on how to check/shut down auto starting programs besides what comes up with an alt+tab+delete, let me know. The culprit programs are not showing in that.
Anyhow, that's why I haven't been blogging or sent out my newsletter or anything this month. What a pain the world is sometimes.
AND, as if that wasn't enough trauma for a writer--to be unable to do much on her computer, therefore writing has been minimal to non-existent...
But worse, I had the worst bad hair day in the history of my world in years. The day before I was supposed to be in Oklahoma City, I got a perm. It was supposed to be one of those things where it just held a slight under curl. You know, enhancing the cut so I wouldn't have to curling iron it every day. Turned into a serious nightmare where it (I kid you not) began to frizz up and fall out in HANDFULS.
This is the night before I was speaking at a national poetry convention (doing readings and representing my state) and the SoonerCON science ficiton convention--doing several panel discussions, signing and reading.
Yeah. That means I did not have time to figure out how to save my hair. The hairdresser said, given a few weeks of repeated reconstructor, we could maybe save the length.
But you know I go too much to do that, to hide for weeks while I work on that. And it was seriously coming out in globbing handfuls. Every brush through was FULL. Talk about horrifying.
So, now my hair is at chin length. I am fully traumatized.
I know I sound like a drama queen. Sorry, that's what I am.
It's one thing to cut your hair short because you want to. It's another thing to HAVE to get it chopped/lopped off so dramatically.
Anyhow, there's a heads up on what my latest drama is. (yeah, pun intended.)
I'm taking all sympathies. And you can say "stop your whining" if you want to. Top my story if you can.
Beyond bad is the fact that there is just enough of the perm in what's left to make the one side curl out and the other curl in. How crappy is that? (It's just stupid, imo.)

... about drinking water

The following will probably amaze and startle you.

One glass of water shuts down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University study.
Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or
Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.
Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day?
(No kidding, all of the above is true...)
Of course, too much water may have strange side effects.

Stem Cell Research, Abortion and Gossip
Abortion and gossip first, then an amazing discovery!
Recently, I posted about that horribly unclean abortion clinic in KC. And I think I stated that I think we should be more responsible up front, that the choice is conception or contraception.
I struggle with the "abortion when you know a baby is deformed" and "abortion for rape victims" issues and haven't come to any terms on that, personally. Ultimately, I believe in preserving life--but when I gave birth to my first daughter, there was a NINE year old giving birth down the hall.
The nurses asked me if there was anything they could get me. I remember asking if they could please shut the door of whoever was wailing "Mama!" over and over again. I was horrified, and shushed to tears (and ashamed) when they explained that it was a little girl who had been raped.
How can a nine year old give birth? Amazing that she'd already started puberty. The same week, the national news syndicate carried stories of an 8 year old that had given birth in NY City. And another article had a 12 year old. I remember wondering if the world had gone mad, and where the heck were the cops who should be arresting the pedaphiles/child molestors who had done this to these children.
I cried for those little girls. I wondered how their mothers could let them go through pregnancy and delivery. I discussed it with all my friends. What would we do? What would lovers of life, and pro-life people do if it were their daughters who were raped?
I cannot even guess and am glad I never had to make that choice. But, because of the fact that I have known rape victims who ended up pregnant, some who got abortions, some who gave their children up for adoption, some who kept the children, and some who miscarred, I cannot make a judgment about abortion, or those who choose to get one. So, I don't want anyone to think I am judging anybody on this issue.
I had a friend who had an abortion and when she confessed to me in tears, I just hugged her and said, "You can't fix the past. Try and forgive yourself, because this guilt that's killing you isn't helping you move on." Later, she said, "I was afraid to tell you because you are so pro-life, but you're the only one of my friends whose said things that help me to put it into perspective."
I've known girls whose boyfriends and husbands gave them money to go get one, but didn't bother to drive them to the clinic. So sad to me.
When I was 12, my church showed us a film about girls who had gone through abortions and were heart broken, and who, on the anniversary of their abortions, went into terrible depressions that lasted for weeks. What struck me MOST was one girl on screen. The minute she appeared, my friends gasped, "That looks like--" They turned to me, aghast. I swore, "It's not me! I never had an abortion!
The teacher hushed us up. The girl cried in tiny little sobs about the baby, wondering who might have adopted it--now that she knew that was an option. She talked about how nobody had told her she could have it and give it to a financially stable family. That had never been an option for her. Her mother had insisted she get rid of it.
Now, again, I'm not judging anybody. We all make the best choices we can for our circumstances at the time.
But we all know how hard it is for a family who has a daughter that gets pregnant out of wedlock. People whisper, and make comments that you can hear behind your back. Some are ignorant enough to judge you to your face.
I had a friend who got a great and unexpected trip to a cousin's house across the country one summer. Her mother called her to tell her that everyone in her church thought she'd gotten pregnant and that's why she'd left so abruptly. The girl was heartsick that people would even conjecture that about her, and didn't even want to go home. She wasn't even pregnant, but the rumors damaged her. As an old lady, she cried when she told me that story. I think people have no idea what damage their little whisperings can cause. I mean, she was in her sixties and that had happened while she was a teenager. She stayed with her cousin for the whole school year. Then she was more afraid to go home because people would assume she stayed long enough to have the baby and give it away. What a vicious little circle of fear that gossip caused. Ya know?
Anyhow, enough about abortion, and gossip, and that. STEM CELL RESEARCH has had an amazing advancement which may stop some of the financial incentive doctors have for doing abortions.
http://www.azcentral.com/business/articles/0606biz-stemcells06-ON.html
In case you're wondering, I am not saying there should be no facilities for abortion. There are special cases which require termination, and like I said, I can be no judge of those.
My sister has cysts on her ovaries and went to a fertility specialist in Las Vegas. He did surgery to remove some, scrape them off or something, and had her on clomed. She conceived. She was thrilled.
But she changed her doctor when she found out the guy delivered an 8 month healthy baby as an abortion and left it to die in the O.R. trash can. A nurse took the baby after he left, and saved it. There was a big debate over that. Now, I know you're screaming 8 months, that's not legal. It was cases like this that caused the current laws to go in effect. The baby was called Adam and he made national news.
But then...
Another story about abortion (a lady who told her story when she was 80):
http://www.newsreview.com/reno/Content?oid=oid%3A53471
But is abortion better than infanticide? Babies being born, then dumped in trash cans, or kids being smothered by their mothers? It's horrible, but it happens.
http://www.fathers.ca/infanticide_2.htm
This next link talks about violence to pregnant women:
http://www.physiciansforlife.org/content/view/1164/26/
Dead baby found. Discussion on blog that talks about whether it was abandoned or murdered, and asking people not to make assumptions:
http://www.topix.net/boston/2007/01/07010717NE3G/p2
Which brings me back to the gossip thing. Let's not make assumptions, or judgments, folks. Let's just thank our higher power that we were never in the position where we felt we had no choice but to do what some of these folks have done. And, if you're one of those people who made the choice to abort a baby, or give one up for adoption, don't beat yourself up over it. Don't feel a need to get self-righteous about it. Forgive yourself. Forgive people around you.
If I can leave one message on this planet when I go it is about unconditional love and forgiveness. I am no judge. We all make mistakes, and should remember the term "There but for the grace of God go I." Put yourself in someone else's shoes. How would you have dealt with the situation? But don't judge them for their choices. Love them even if their past decisions don't agree with yours. That is the higher spiritual path in my opinion.
And we should all rejoice in the stem cell research advancements. Amazing things are happening in science. If you see something like this, share it with us, by all means.

Totally agree with everything you said here. I, too, don't see abortion as completely black and white. It's such a complicated issue with so many entanglements. The stem cell research being one of them. I was thrilled to see that scientists are making headway in what will make for so many amazing cures and they'll be able to do it without having dirty little secrets as a genesis.
Also ditto on the judgments. Life is about learning. We should all help each other, not try to squash each other down with guilt and judgment.

300
I wanted to be more uplifting in my blog posts for awhile. Working on sending and receiving positive energy and all that.
You know, talk about things I'm grateful for. Of course, I'm grateful for my husband and children, and that one of my daughters is happily married. (Only three more to go!)
Anyhow, I've been contemplating this "how to uplift without being sappy" concept. And, of course, I've got a creative mind so it went off in lots of little tangents. (All those voices in my head saying do it this way, no this way, no, look at this idea!)
I have this new, and totally silly, plan. I received an email that challenged me to speak my gratitude and my wants aloud more often. So, instead of mumbling everywhere I go, I thought, how can I do this without looking entirely crazy?
Because I have a small bladder and IBS, and frequent the bathroom about as much as any other place on the planet, and it's a place I'm generally alone :) I thought...hey, that's the place to throw up those little happy thoughts!
I challenge you, too, to consider that as a perfect place to say "I'm grateful for...and I want to be, or have." I suppose you can call it a prayer, and do it that way if you want. Or you can consider it a meditation. I consider it a halfway point, sending the positives up. You can address deity, or angels, or the universe. And you can close with an amen, or not. It's your deal, do it your way.
I think that doing this will help us to be happier in our lives, and it works on the law of attraction which will bring more of these things you want and appreciate into your life. Take the challenge, see if it works for you.
**
I titled this post 300 because I went to see that amazing film last night. AMAZING. Have you seen it? It is AMAZING. Can I say that enough?
There was a brilliant use of ripped abs (and a few tittys, so be fairly warned.) THe director had moments of phenomenal talent showing so many times that I mostly sat back with a WOW on my lips.
It's a great story about Spartans. There's heroism galore, and some sacrifice, and romance (epic), and deceit, betrayal, and crazy cool graphic integration.
I think that's a film to own, personally. I love the "Christ" touch of martyrdom at the end. Get me straight on this, though--there was no talk of Christ. But there is a death scene at the end where the Spartans are downed with a million arrows. It looks like it should be painted on the ceiling of a cathedral when they do a panoramic view of it, and in the center is...well, see the picture. It's just amazingly well done. (Can I say AMAZING enough?)
So, let me add that I am grateful for amazing writers, and gifted directors, and talented actors, and brilliant cinematographers and phenomenal graphic artists--because they produce AMAZING entertainment for us. Ya gotta cheer the talent that goes into epic films.
May I soon write a bunch of epics (books and screenplays) that become AMAZING films and national and international best sellers.
Wouldn't that be cool? Because, if I had that much money rolling in, I'd buy a cruise out and put my faithful fans and friends on it for FREE.
So wish me that sort of luck and ability so that we can cruise, babies! And you can mark this day down, so you can remind me if ever I forget. (I don't think I will.)

Hungry? Making Homemade Bread at 10:19 pm
What will you make us for dinner? (daughter)
What do you want? (me)
What can you think of? (daughter)
I dunno. You're the one that's hungry. What do you want? (me)
Silence. (daughter again) Something good.
Okay. How about some homemade pizza or bread? (me)
Do you have corn meal? (my son chimes in) I really like it when it has corn meal on the bottom.
(me) Bread or pizza?
Both. (him again)
Bread. (her)
So, um, that was around 9 o'clock. See what a bad mom I am? Didn't think to fix dinner because I wasn't hungry. How, in hell, do I stay so big?
Doesn't matter, I guess. I'm fixing bread. I just put it in the oven. Maybe it's the eating after ten? The eating of BREAD after ten?
I used to make homemade bread and pizza all the time. Since my husband heard they'd voted for bread instead of pizza, he went and got some pepperoni and cheese to snack on. He's italian. It's a staple (snack, meal, whatever) at our house.
I looked through the fridge. Eggs are outdated. Not much in there now besides the p and c I mentioned, and condiments. Got a lot of those, though. You could make a meal of salad dressing if you were really hungry, I guess.
Checking the cabinets, I see soup, canned tamales and chile, and pudding and brownie mixes. Some corn and beans. HM. SOMEBODY has been traveling too much to buy groceries, I guess. Probably should consider doing that tomorrow.
Definitely gotta buy salad and pizza rolls. The kids are addicted to those. Potatoes and onions for the husband, who likes them fried.
Milk for the cereal eating kid. Bread. Eggs that aren't outdated. And juice.
Okay, now why the heck is she giving us a grocery list?
I'll tell you why. The girl is totally stuck in her ways.
Could you cough up some of your favorite recipes, meal ideas, please? If all the lurkers and posters here could come up with at least ONE thing, my family might get out of its rut and I'd get back into the swing of cooking. NO seafood recipes though. I'm afraid the masses aren't in favor of those. Hubby doesn't like chicken but the kids and I do, and he's gone all day, so we need lunch ideas. Got any?Labels: Food, homemade bread, pizza

I've got a couple chicken recipes, but one makes A LOT. And it's easy. One is a one-pot deal, the other... not so much.
Chcken Tetrazini
Whatever kind of chicken meat you like
Spaghetti noodles (we usually use 3/4 a package)
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 soup can of milk
1/2 a cube of Velveeta cheese
Boil the chicken until it's done and take it out of the water. In the same water, cook the spaghetti noodles. Add the soups and the milk, stir well. Add the cheese in (cut up in pieces so it'll melt quicker). Tear the chicken in pieces and add back to the pot. Stir it so the chicken's mixed in well. Once the cheese is melted, it's done.
-----
Chicken South of the Border
Chicken
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 soup can of milk
2 Tbsp salsa (or more, however you like it)
Tortilla chips
Velveeta cheese
Again, boil the chicken until it's done. (I never know how long.) In a casserole dish/cake pan, crumble tortilla chips in the bottom. (Don't use any oil or cooking spray in the pan.) Mix the soups, milk, and salsa together. WHen the chicken's done (and cool enough to handle), tear it apart and scatter it generously over the chips. Pour the soup/salsa mixture over the chips and chicken. Scatter pieces of cheese generously over the top. Bake it at about 350d. When the cheese is melted and bubbly, it's done. (Usually about 10-ish minutes).
My family eats a fairly meat-and-potatoes style diet (with lots of salad too), so I'm not sure if I have many interesting ideas. If I think of anything, I'll come back and post it.

Where did you get these cartoons? They are funny
Too funny. And sadly true!
On our trip to California, we paid less for gas in Arizona than we did in Oklahoma. In the middle of the desert! Go figure, huh?
I did more than smile on this visit. The cartoons are enough to make a person cry, they're so true.
These are great!
